ARTIST STATEMENT
Our bodies betray us: disease takes hold, cells mutate into cancer, infection overwhelms our system. Circumstances intervene: a shooter enters a theater, a plane crashes into a building, a truck crosses the median, a war erupts, a flood destroys our home, a wildfire makes us run, a virus disrupts everything.
As a registered nurse, I cared for people who deserved and desired to live as much as anyone. These people, infants through the elderly, were surrounded by love, prayer, hope, belief, and every medical option but still death came. These experiences shaped how I perceive the fragility of life.
I am interested in topics that explore human vulnerability and exploitation. The out-of-our-control experiences that can change lives in an instant. I create to confront people’s conditioned perceptions, responses, and ability to look the other way. The realization that no one is immune from experiencing displacement, loss, illness, injury, and tragedy impacts the viewer.
The paradox of our perceived invincibility and our actual susceptibility is my interest. The intersection of these two human places is my work.
