Specific words are used as weapons toward the female gender. The intent is to keep us in our place and enculturate our way of being in the world. Don’t draw attention to yourself. Don’t be too overtly sexual. Don’t talk too loudly. Don’t be so sensitive. Be responsive when someone tells you to smile. Be flattered when they whistle their approval. We are the weaker gender, the gentle gender, the emotional gender, the 81 cents on the dollar gender, the object of the male gaze. In this book, I am naming these words to draw attention to these inequities. Using quotes, book passages, journal articles, and magazine articles, I feature the words of women regarding each of the ABCs of Nasty Women. One man, Sharon, has content because he did the research and wrote the book about female chromosomes. My intent is to provoke thought about these words, their meaning in the world and their meaning to you.
