Stuck, 2022

yarn, latex house paint, fabric stiffener, one mask
210 x 156 x 120 in.

The early days of the pandemic were especially difficult for me. I have depression and PTSD from pre-pandemic diagnoses and the worry and isolation, change in structure exacerbated my symptoms. This sculpture made of yarn, fabric stiffener, latex paint and a single mask comes from that place. The tangle of yarn represents the figure of me.  I wanted the form to give the impression of a figure without being very representational.

The form is made of yarn tangled together and held in place by extensions of the figure that span the space and anchor to the ceiling, walls, and floor. Color exists in the yarn and in the first several layers of paint. With close observation, yarn colors are still apparent.  The bright colors of paint peek out from beneath the black paint. The color represents the joy, movement, and normalcy when I’m feeling my regular self.  The tethering and black paint oozing over the structure holding it in place and draining it of color is what depression feels like to me.
